Furnitubes seating enhances footbridge area
People using a footbridge connecting areas of a new development in Wiltshire can relax and enjoy the surroundings, thanks to seating from Furnitubes International.
Wichelstowe, on the edge of Swindon, is an urban extension ultimately comprising 4500 new homes, employment space, public open space, shopping, community facilities for residents and various schools. Bounded by the M4 to the south and the edge of Swindon to the north, the area is crossed by a number of waterways, including the Wilts and Berks Canal, a new footbridge over which provides an important link between a Waitrose store and the new Hall and Woodhouse pub, and surrounding residential areas.
Measuring 35m in length, the bridge includes ornate laser cut steel panels and coloured resin strips within the balustrade uprights, through which sunlight passes to create coloured shadows during the day and which is illuminated at night by lighting within the handrails. The provision of new seating was central to the footbridge scheme.
Furnitubes supplied three distinctly different types of seating, though all using a common material palette of hardwood seating surfaces on galvanised steelwork supports / frames in a grey PPC finish, with the more visible arm and backrest components in stainless steel.
On the bridge itself a curved RailRoad Narrow ‘Edge’ bench was used, adjacent to the abutments at both ends of the bridge bespoke platforms provide large seating surfaces and in the surrounding hard landscaped areas bespoke seat and bench modules have been built into low level planter retaining walls. In total over 20 seating modules were supplied.
