Kent Blaxill in a Brush with History
Colchester’s historic Moot Hall has been given a £285,000 facelift by decorators Coldec, with paints supplied by Kent Blaxill. Representatives and management from both companies met in the room, the centrepiece of the Town Hall, for a final inspection.
Colchester company Coldec spent eight weeks in the spectacular room, with 12 painters working on multiple-level ‘birdcage’ scaffolding. They also painted the outside of the building. More than 450 litres of paint was supplied for the project by Kent Blaxill. The main contractor was Bakers of Danbury.
“It was particularly intricate and time-consuming work, especially at the top of the columns near the ceiling,” said Phil Morris, Coldec contracts manager. “It took one painter three weeks to complete the top of the columns alone.”
These were painted using a specialist ‘wiped’ technique to give a two-tone effect. At ground level the wooden wall panels had to be stripped back and re-varnished. In some areas, detailing was painted in gold.
Coldec managing director Simon Brown said: “There are not many contracts of this quality around here, so we were pleased to win the work.” Elsewhere, Coldec has a number of prestigious contracts, including being on site at St Paul’s Cathedral for the past 12 years working on an ongoing redecoration programme.
Simon Brown said: “We use Kent Blaxill as our supplier because we have built up a relationship over 25 years. The stocks are good and the service is excellent.”
