John Newton Membranes Waterproofs Defra House
The DEFRA Headquarters in Whitehall, London received waterproofing treatment from John Newton Membranes as part of a refurbishment project.
The existing shell of DEFRA’s Head Office in London was to remain whilst the architects and engineers designed a totally newbuild structure internally. The construction was to include multiple basement levels which needed to be protected to the highest level of structural waterproofing standards.
John Newton Membranes Specialist Basement Contractor Stonehouse Basements was brought in at the initial design stage to work with the architects and engineers to design and install a waterproofing solution that could work with the intricate waterproofing details.
As the system needed to be able to drain through retaining slabs, the solution was to incorporate the Newton Baseboard conduit. Baseboard is an above ground drainage system that captures ingression of water from retaining walls. Prior to the membrane application, the Engineer cast 22mm pipes into the retaining slabs to move water down to lower levels of the construction. The Newton Baseboard system was bonded to the raft with an epoxy resin and the Newton 508 membrane was fixed to the walls to guide water to the conduit. An internal dry lining frame was used as a finish in front of the 508 membrane.
The water management system installed was able to cope with the difficult prospect of draining water through multiple retaining levels with a quality internal finish.
Stonehouse Basements was able to offer a quick and clean waterproofing solution without extensive preparation works as would have been the case with a tanking alternative.
