Types and Uses
Where would building contractors be without the trusty wheelbarrow? With the weight of the load being split between the wheel and the person pushing the barrow, workers are able to move much heavier goods than would be possible on their own.
The single-wheeled barrow is popular on construction sites, being ideal for pushing up planks and easy to manoeuvre when tipping out the contents. Two-wheeled versions are often chosen for bulky loads in the agricultural or horticultural industries, over more level ground.
Murals show that wooden wheelbarrows were in use in Ancient China in the 2nd Century. Today, wheelbarrows comprise a sturdy tubular frame with a tray made of metal or polypropylene. Wheels with pneumatic tyres are normally specified, to give a smoother ride, but to avoid the problems of repeated punctures, solid rubber tyres are available.
