Simple Water Control
Surprisingly, insurance companies in the UK pay out more for water damage in the home than for fire damage or burglaries. It could be caused by burst pipes or water tanks due to bad weather or degraded connections; a faulty washing machine or dishwasher; or simply taps that have been accidentally left running. Hundreds of thousands of litres of water are wasted this way every year and the cost and distress to homeowners is incalculable.
But if the water supply needs to be turned off in an emergency or when leaving the property, how many people know where the stopcock is? And even if it can be located quickly, the traditional brass stop tap can be very difficult to operate, particularly for the elderly.
There is an alternative however. Water supply can now be closed off at the flick of a switch, as easily as operating a light switch.
The water switches are remote connected to a valve which is plumbed in the mains water supply. The switch looks like an electrical switch, with the same easy-to-operate rocker motion, and can be fitted in a convenient location, often the kitchen. Some valves need batteries, others operate on water pressure alone. There are systems that can be fitted with water leak sensors.
This type of mains water control has proved popular with local authorities and housing associations and developers are also realising the benefits of a product that provides easy compliance with the Lifetime Homes Standards.
