Types and Uses
Doors left open are bad news for security, heating bills and noise disturbance; so devices that close a door after someone has opened it or it has been opened automatically are important in the industrial and commercial world. In particular, door closers ensure that fire doors are properly latched and meet regulatory requirements.
A large, heavy door can present a considerable injury risk if not controlled, so care needs to be taken to choose a high quality door closer that is suitable for the task. Criteria to be taken into account include whether it is an interior or exterior door, the volume of traffic through and how much the location is affected by changes in air pressure or strong winds. The amount of resistance in the closer might need to be tailored to allow the door to be opened by elderly or infirm people.
Door closers come in various sizes according to the size of the door, location and application. Aesthetics play a role too and models are available in stainless steel, brass or silver. Most models allow adjustments to the speed of closing.
