Adhesive Tapes for all Applications
There have been huge advances in adhesives technology over recent years and adhesive tapes can be found playing vital roles in all kinds of places – even on the wingflaps of commercial aircraft. Here, thin two-sided acrylic adhesive tape is used to fix the stainless steel scuff strips that prevent abrasion between the aluminium flap and the underside of the wing. In this situation, the tape needs to withstand huge temperature swings, vibration, humidity, and de-icing solvents.
This is just one example of the extraordinarily strong bond and flexibility that can be achieved with adhesive tapes. Like liquid adhesives, single or double sided tape can be used to secure a huge range of materials, including paper, metal, rubber, polystyrene, polycarbonate, UPVC and polypropylene. But tapes have the added advantage of being fast and easy to apply, without waste, and having a far superior shelf life. There is no mixing involved and no clean up time afterwards.
In addition to attachment, adhesive tapes can provide a seal, thermal or acoustic insulation, or dampen vibration. With no need for welding or protruding mechanical fasteners, designers can achieve light weights and clean lines. Tapes are simple to work with, requiring no special tools, so labour times and costs are reduced compared to mechanical fixings.
