Types and Uses
The harmful ways noise can affect people’s lives is now widely recognised and legislation and codes of practice have been written to guard against noise intrusion.
A wide range of products is now available to lessen the noise impact of industrial and environmental operations and to improve acoustics in home, office or education spaces. Acoustic insulation products can be added to the floors or walls of buildings during construction or retrospectively.
Interior acoustic treatments are no longer viewed as an unwanted necessity and a great deal of thought goes into the design of products that are aesthetically appealing as well as highly functional.
For exterior noise control, such as around road and rail infrastructure or construction sites, durability and ease of maintenance of the noise barrier is a key factor, with good looks still playing a role. Most suppliers offer a choice of colours.
Barriers made of recycled plastics are available, which are not only resistant to aggressive environments such as salt spray and oils, but also score highly on the environmental front.
Acoustic panels come in a choice of noise reflective or noise absorptive versions. Check they have been tested and rated in accordance with European standards.
