Flat Roofing on the Rise
For many years, flat roofs were seen as a cheap, but high maintenance, option for garages, home extensions and commercial or industrial buildings. Now, with huge advances in waterproofing and insulation materials and methods of construction, flat roofs are much more durable and the design flexibility they offer can make them a first choice in new construction. The old type of ‘cold deck’ flat roof is fast disappearing and being replaced by ‘warm’ (sandwich) construction, with insulation either below or above the weatherproof membrane.
Flat roofs offer the possibility of becoming a ‘green roof’, planted with sedum or other vegetation that provides cover for insects, controls water run-off and removes carbon emissions. A flat roof area can also be used as a terrace, balcony or walkway and this is an increasingly popular choice. A correctly installed roof terrace can become an attractive communal area for residential complexes or office blocks.
