Hi,
I live in a 1920's mid terrace house and the spliced purlings are parting...is there a clamp or method to draw these back together and secure them?
Thanks,
Mick
Mick,
Very difficult to suggest a solution without close inspection of the roof structure.
I’m guessing that what you are describing is what was quite often a rather rough lapped joint in the purlins...originally there would be have been a couple of props supporting the purlins. Are these still there?
If the “parting” is very significant this may have been caused by some structural movement in the roof. Sometimes timbers are simply removed by homeowners because they are in the way. Over time this permits excessive deflection in roof timbers and sagging in the roof.
Doubtless there will be a solution - do get some further independent professional advice. It’ll save you money in the long run. I often ask for photos these days to be able to provide an initial remote diagnosis.

Can an attic roof truss span 10m without intermediate supports ie. can the space underneath be totally open plan?
Room in the Roof (RIR) or attic trussed rafters provide the structural roof and floor in the same component. For large spans internal, intermediate supports may be needed within the non-habitable spaces of the trussed rafters. In some cases the trusses may need to be produced in two parts. Your Local Authority Building Control Team will be able to advise you on the necessary requirements to meet current legislation.
Fforest Timber Engineering featured above also provides a link to a TRA product data sheet for room in the roof trusses. This includes a table of typical 'RIR' configurations which gives the size of loft room available for differing configurations of span and pitch, which may be helpful.
Kind regards
