Maximising Light with Roof Lanterns
The benefits of natural light on health and wellbeing are well documented, so any architectural feature that increases the amount of daylight into a room is a boon. This is the role of a roof lantern.
Roof lanterns have been around since the Middle Ages and were a popular feature of Renaissance cathedrals. These lanterns were of masonry and glass; later timber was widely used, then metal. In the past, many structures were prone to leaking. Today, advances in glazing and sealing techniques have solved water tightness problems and high performance glass reduces energy loss.
Modern roof lanterns are created from wood or aluminium with glass or polycarbonate glazing. Aluminium has many advantages, among them its light weight with great strength which allows the use of slim roof beams, maximising the glass area. Aluminium is very low maintenance and can be finished in any RAL colour. Thermally broken aluminium profiles cut out cold bridging.
