Warmth From the Air
With today’s emphasis on renewable technologies, air source heat pumps are being specified for more and more properties. They are a low-energy alternative to conventional boilers and create no local CO2 emissions.
Air source heat pumps (AHSP) use external air as their heat source and heat sink and are efficient even at low temperatures. They use a refrigerant process to transform the low-grade heat from the outside air into high-grade energy for heating. Systems are classified as either air-to-air or air-to-water, the latter being the most popular and often chosen to link with underfloor heating.
When correctly specified, these pumps can offer a full heating solution for domestic properties and offer significant savings on fuel bills. Although similar in operation to ground source pumps, they are cheaper to install and maintenance costs are low due to few moving parts. Air source heat pumps can be used with other renewable technology to achieve reduced U values.
