Lead a green leader

Lead has been used as a building material for centuries and although out of favour for pipework, it continues to be popular for roofing and cladding, having many benefits – not least its green credentials and aesthetic qualities. Because of this, it is increasingly being specified for new buildings as well as being found on conservation projects.

Lead has a very long lifespan so can be safely used for projects needing to comply with Euro code requirements for a 60-year design life. Its longevity leads to cost savings. Lead does not degrade with weather and flashings made from rolled lead sheet last on average three times longer than other proprietary flashing products. With an established recycling infrastructure in place, there is virtually no waste. Lead appears in the BRE Green guide with a rating of A or A+, depending on the use to which it is put.

Working with lead is a highly skilled job, but with no messy adhesives needed and the ability to shape products, a neat finish can be achieved on flashings, guttering, copings and cladding. It can be installed in most weather conditions, minimising project delays.
