Light Up for Less
It’s rare these days for the word lighting to appear without being prefixed by the clause ‘energy-saving’. Everyone from homeowners to businesses and local authorities is being urged to reduce energy usage and the government has set ambitious targets for lowering carbon emissions. Cutting the lighting bill is one of the easiest ways to save money in the home – and for organisations like health or educational establishments the savings can be huge.
Energy efficient lighting has been revolutionised by huge advances in the technology of light emitting diodes (LED) and new-style fluorescent lamps. Both these systems are more expensive to buy initially than old style incandescent bulbs, but they last much longer and use far less electricity so the savings in energy costs more than compensates for this.
Across the country, councils are replacing street lights and changing lights in schools and libraries with energy-efficient low maintenance alternatives. It does not have to involve the expense of starting from scratch. Sometimes replacing fluorescent tubes with more efficient versions and changing controllers can lead to big savings.
