Types and Uses
Lighting has seen major advances in both technology and design in recent years. Downlights are one area that has seen a huge increase in popularity. Because the light fitting is recessed, with most of it hidden out of sight in the ceiling, downlights give modern, clean lines and can help to create a feeling of more space.
Initially chosen mostly for kitchens and bathrooms, downlights are now being used in any room of the house where they are valued for their even, low shadow lighting. Downlights are available with a circular or square decorative rim. Many are directional.
There are three main types – low voltage or mains voltage halogen lights and dedicated low energy downlights using LEDs. Low voltage downlights require a transformer but produce a crisp white light and bulbs tend to last longer. LED lights are the most energy efficient and can be used to introduce colour and like halogen bulbs, can be dimmed with the right equipment.
