Benefits of flagstones

Flagstones add a touch of class to any property, new or old. Stone flags have been popular flooring materials in Europe since the 13th century and bring to mind images of romantic castles. Many flagstone floors in period properties are centuries old and have aged beautifully. This is part of the attraction of a stone floor.

Today, flagstones are most likely to be chosen for kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories and hallways. Flagstones for exterior use are also available and will generally be of greater thickness.

When laid properly, flagstones will last for decades and are easy to look after. Regular sweeping or vacuuming with a brush attachment and a wipe with a ph neutral cleaner is all that is required for sealed interior flagstones.

Natural flags come from sandstone or slate quarries in the UK or from abroad. A wide range of colours and finishes is available, with different areas providing characteristically different stone, as in the honey gold of the Cotswolds, blue-grey of Scotland and light grey of the Bath region.

With natural resources being limited, natural stone flags can work out expensive, although many people believe it is worth paying for their beauty and longevity. An alternative, at a more realistic price, is to use crafted replica flagstones which can in the best cases be virtually indistinguishable from real stone.
