Environmental Benefits

Conventional paints contain petrochemical solvents which have been shown to carry a long-term health risk. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde are responsible for the characteristic smell of paint and can linger in the atmosphere for years.

Since 2010, companies have had to comply with stringent new EU limits on levels of harmful VOCs – but that does not mean that everything labelled ‘non toxic’ is environmentally friendly. Many paints from conventional companies still contain a lower level of VOC solvents, as well as chemical pigments and fungicides and the manufacturing often involves potentially harmful production processes.

An alternative for those looking to protect their health and the environment is to choose an eco paint made from sustainable, natural ingredients.

There is currently no clear definition of an eco paint, so the only answer is to read the label carefully or consult the paint company’s website for detailed information. Some making eco claims might still use petrochemical based solvents, but in smaller quantities. Others are made with natural solvents, but may still contain VOCs as these are found in the citrus fruits from which some types of eco paints are derived. Sometimes titanium dioxide – a big contributor to environmental problems – might be added as a whitener. Animal products might also be included, but there are purely plant-based options available.

Eco paints will probably be more expensive than conventional paint, but the difference is not huge, and most buyers concerned about the environment are prepared to pay a little extra for natural ingredients and low-carbon production processes.

In the early days, there was a limited colour choice in eco paints and it was felt they were not as durable. But improvements are being made all the time and there is now a comprehensive range of stylish shades available plus colour-matching services and paint performance can be just as good – if not better – as synthetic versions if the product is applied correctly.
