Types and Uses
Radiant heating is an energy efficient way of providing comfort for the occupants of high roofed buildings like warehousing, sports centres, factories, aircraft hangars and military facilities. Heating in the same way as the sun, radiant heating systems warm objects – in most cases people or buildings – rather than the air. This can cut energy costs dramatically, as the heat is directed just to the area needed and not to warming air that can quickly be moved away.
With radiant systems, the heat is instant; there is no need for pre-heating, so they are particularly useful for intermittently used areas. Overall, fewer heaters are needed in a building by choosing to heat only selected zones, and it is simple to vary the temperature in different areas.
Not warming the atmosphere offers big savings in running costs and cuts down on the movement of air inside a room, which can be important where there are likely to be airborne particles. Outdoors, convection heating is impractical because of the constant movement of air. Patio heaters are an example of effective outdoors radiant heating.
Radiant heaters can be gas powered or electric.
