It’s hard to imagine a world without pumps. The Egyptians are credited with inventing the first device to move liquids from one location to another with the shadoof in 2000 BC. This pole with weights and a bucket is still used as an irrigation tool in some parts of the world, but far more sophisticated pumps have now been developed to carry out complex operations not just in agriculture but a huge range of industries.
Today, pumps might be used to move gases and slurries as well as liquids and can be found performing valuable work in locations as diverse as sewage works, construction sites, chemical plants, farms and domestic bathrooms. The simple hand pump has been joined by numerous powered pumps operated by engines, steam, electricity or wind power.
