Types and uses of pipes
Every building needs pipework to carry water and other fluids or gases around in a safe and effective way. Depending on the function, the pipework may be made of metals, plastic or concrete, in a wide range of diameters.
Fittings, valves and other components are used to control the pressure and flow rate of the fluid being transmitted within the pipe.
Lead piping is no longer used but other metals including copper, stainless steel and aluminium feature strongly as pipework and in certain industries, exotic materials such as titanium may be used to transport raw or semi-processed fluids.
Plastic has many advantages, not least its lack of appeal to thieves, compared to metal. It is also lightweight for easy handling and does not expand or contract with temperature changes as much as metal. It can be used to convey drinking water and waste water, chemicals, heating oils, cooling fluid, slurries, foodstuffs and gases.
