I am building a new house and intend to incorporate a 'heat recovery unit'. Will I still need extractor fans in the bathrooms?
No, extractor fans are not required. The general principle is that air is very gently extracted from the ‘wet areas’ like kitchens and bathrooms. As this hot moist air leaves the house the outgoing air gives up its heat to warm the incoming fresh air that is then sent to the general living and bedroom areas. The system normally has a ‘boost’ switch in the bathrooms in order that the fan of the heat recovery units increases its extraction speed, for example when a shower is being taken.

How efficient are heat recovery units?
Manufacturers report independent tests in excess of at least 90% efficiency, even over 95%. However, be wary and find a reputable manufacturer with good test data. It is vital to get the system properly commissioned and balanced. The filters become dirty after only a few months, which shows the unit is providing additional health benefits as well as a fresh atmosphere in the building. Do not fit and forget!

Can heat recovery units be used in reverse for cooling instead of providing 'free' heat?
Not as standard, but many manufacturers have an air conditioning unit that can be bolted onto the original unit. This then uses the same ducting etc and in certain cases the same fan. These can get bulky so are often located in a cupboard rather than a roof space.
