What is a Retaining Wall?
Due to the nature of the UK’s landscape, there is often the need to build retaining walls. The main purpose of this type of wall is to hold back the earth behind it in a secure and stable way. The size of the wall and structure behind it will depend on the consistency and type of earth or rock which is being ‘retained’. On many of our motorways and highways highly engineered walls and ground stabilisation methods are used to keep the earth from falling to the roads.
For private properties a retaining wall could be only 4 to 4 brick courses high to border a garden, or if built on a hill or slope a more solid construction to hold back the earth. For smaller heights it may only be necessary to build the wall in the standard way and the foundations may be strong enough to take the pressure of the earth behind.
The higher the wall needs to be, the more gravitational pressure will be placed upon the wall. In these cases proper concrete footings need to be installed prior to the wall being built and also wetter holes installed which allow moisture in the earth to drain out and not damage the mortar or jointing in the wall itself.
In most cases it is necessary to consult a structural engineer to make load calculations and then design a wall which will last and remain secure. It is also important to consider what the wall is actually retaining.
If it is soil, the type of soil may affect the level of drainage needed; if it is solid rock then this is unlikely to have the same pressure loads as soil or other types of earth which naturally move and settle depending on weather conditions.
Featured Company - Marshalls CPM
For both small and large projects needing ground stabilisation, Marshalls CPM has developed the Redi-Rock retaining wall system. This innovative system provides an aesthetically pleasing fascia while offering excellent retention and flood protection. The company has developed an interlocking block system which means substantial heights can be achieved without affecting the level of support.
Each block weighs 1 tonne and has recycled properties to ensure it is a sustainable product. The blocks can be used for garden retaining walls, vehicle prevention and building protection, large scale modular walls, reinforcement and river or tidal flood protection.
Redi-Rock is an excellent solution to wall retention ensuring all the structural requirements can be satisfied with each block providing the strength needed and a secure interlocking system for stability. Each project is designed and drawings can be provided to showcase how Redi-Rock will be installed.
Marshalls CPM website also specialises in drainage, environmental management, precast, rail and off site solutions.
