Can you advise if there is a body or company that can give real expert advice regarding external glass balcony screens AND the various supporting systems. We live in a 3 year old apartment in a very exposed area and the blocks are having an issue with panels breaking, five in the last year. Every expert that is contacted has a different view of the possible reason and only seem to know what systems they install. We really need someone who fully understands what posts, rails and glass should be used and if necessary be recognised as a true expert witness. Whilst the original builder is still involved, he is not an expert and will not keep replacing glass for ever. There is also the serious issue of liability for any injuries as the panels are up to 2d floor level and above gardens.
The structure is clearly not fit for purpose and in these circumstances it is best to initially contact your local authority Trading Standards team and a good local, independent Structural Engineer for advice. Both are listed above under Construction Resources and Construction Professionals. If matters need to be investigated further then the Pilkington European Technical Centre at Ormskirk Tel 01695 50000 or the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing at Brunel University, London Tel 01895 274000 may be able to point you in the direction of a Balcony Glass expert.
Kind regards
