Types and Uses
Maintenance projects and construction work mean that trench excavations are an unavoidable part of life. While work is going on, a way of covering the trench is needed to allow safe passage for pedestrians and vehicles.
Gone are the days of dropping down any old plank over a trench. To meet safety regulations, local authorities, utilities companies and reputable maintenance teams will require that trench covers are non-slip, highly visible, have non-trip edges and can be securely fixed in place. Also desirable in today’s climate of metal thefts is a cover that has no scrap value.
Products are available to cover different widths of aperture and for a variety of specified load weights.
Featured Company – Access Needs
Access Needs has wide experience of supplying the commercial market with ramps and other products to facilitate access. For trench covers, the company has two choices – Trench Boards or Road Plates.
The versatile Trench Boards are available in three sizes for permitting pedestrians and light vehicles access over apertures or trenches. Installation is quick and simple using fixing pins for bitumen surfaces, or butyl adhesive developed for stone or concrete. The highly visible glass reinforced plastic boards are lighter than steel sheets, have no scrap value and are easy to clean and maintain.
Additional benefits are the non-slip surface, even when wet; a 3mm leading edge to prevent trips; recessed fixing and rubber feet to allow safe installation and prevent movement. The material neither warps nor de-laminates in adverse weather conditions and boards can be embedded with corporate logos. Vehicular access to private drives is easily maintained.
For a safe way of maintaining traffic flow during excavation work on roads, Road Plates are the answer. They are designed to allow the passage of most vehicles including HGVs up to the normal weight restrictions. Like the Trench Boards, the GRP plates have no scrap value, are easy to clean and will not warp even in bad weather. They are easy to lift and install by two people, yet are capable of safely supporting a load of six tonnes.
Recessed fixing holes are provided at each corner and anchor pins are available for use with bitumen and concrete surfaces.
Trench Boards and Road Plates comply with UK and European legislation and roadworks Codes of Practice.
