Concertina Gates for security
Concertina Gates otherwise known as Retractable Security Grilles are an increasingly popular choice for both home and business. As a space saving alternative to other fixed forms of either internal or external security they also offer a less intrusive appearance as they can be withdrawn and ease of installation.
Widely associated with providing security to doors and passages and early lift installations, the history of these systems dates back to the Victorian era. Famously they were also used by the builders of the Titanic to control the movement of steerage passengers.
The range of grilles available is almost as wide as the choice of descriptions, these include: folding grilles, collapsible grilles, stacking grilles, fully tracked and untracked grilles. Other less common descriptions include sliding grilles, scissor grilles and accordion grilles.
Many of these original installations remain in use today in factories and railway station and clearly they pass the test for suitability and durability for this type of secure gate system.
In modern products the fundamentals remain unchanged with the folding riveted panels and the use of top and bottom track and rollers to secure wide openings. Modern manufacturing techniques however, have enhanced performance with the introduction of galvanized components, polyester powder coating (offering a wide colour ranges) and lighter weight aluminium systems.
Given the primary security function of these systems it is wise to search for manufacturers that can demonstrate high levels of quality control in manufacturing with products having Loss Prevention Council Board (LPCB) accreditation.
There are currently two levels and both are backed by insurance companies. Level Two requires a much higher specification.
To achieve accreditation, grilles are tested to ensure they meet certain physical qualities. Additionally, the way in which grilles are installed must comply to strict guidance which controls what the grilles are fixed to and with what. Clearly there is no point in opting for an insurance approved security grille if it is not installed correctly. Seek out manufacturers and installers that comply with the LPCB standards.
Make sure when requesting a quotation from a supplier that the location is clearly defined and the level of security specified.
