Types and Benefits
External cladding is added to buildings for its aesthetic benefits and to control the effects of weather on the structure. Rainscreen cladding can be used to direct rain and wind away, keeping the structure dry. The two-layer construction provides valuable thermal insulation and dissipates heat from the sun, preventing temperature fluctuations. External cladding is rear ventilated allowing evaporation and drainage in the cavity.
Several materials can be used as cladding, including various metals such as zinc and aluminium, timber, tiles, brick and stone panels plus composites. Each offers decorative as well as functional advantages. For public spaces, a fire-rated cladding should be specified.
Most external cladding materials are exceptionally versatile and can be used to provide a ventilated cladding system on a new development or a refurbishment project. Durable cladding panels come in many sizes and different thicknesses. The panels can be curved, shaped and sculpted to suit various designs. There is a vast range of colours and effects available; with a coloured façade, check for UV fade resistance.
A lightweight cladding material will be easy to fix and will not need a heavy sub-structures.
