Where to buy recessed manhole covers

We have a recessed internal manhole cover in our lounge which was put in when the extention was built in June 2006. The carpet has gradually began to smell worse by the day as does the underlay. So we lifted the carpet at the weekend and discovered the concrete which sits in the recessed cover smells terrible. I think the cover is a basic galvanised one with the 4 screws to lock it down. It seems the smell is from the concrete. Do you know why this is and how could we prevent it happening, do we need a better quality cover and does the concrete need to be a special type?
Thanks.
It does seem likely that the smell is emanating from the drain rather than from the cover itself. Nevertheless, I would recommend that you invite a professional to investigate the problem on site as soon as possible.
For internal applications it is usually necessary to install a double sealed manhole cover (where the cover and the frame are bolted together to create an airtight seal) or a cover which is precision engineered to fit together perfectly to prevent odour problems. Both Ensor Building Products and Aco Building Drainage on our 'Below Ground Drainage' page offer this type of cover and it may also be worth contacting them to discuss the matter further.
