Is it permissible to use veneer facing up to 1.5 mm thick on a 90 minute steel door. Is there any UN regulation permitting the same without the need of a real test.
Hi Lawrence,
Thank you for your queries.
I strongly advise you to discuss the matter with the relevant Local Authority Building Control
Team (contacts for Local Authorities can also be found on the our website in the 'Construction Rescources' section at the top). However, my investigations suggest that once the door's integrity is maintained, there should be no reason why it cannot be faced with a veneer or paint.
The only issue that would have to be considered would be the surface spread of flame rating of the applied material. Walls and ceilings generally need a surface spread of flame rating. Once the material applied meets this rating, there should be no problem. Building Control Officers that I have dealt with have not usually requested further testing to be carried out on the door but it
is best to check with them directly.
Kind regards,
Debbie Prince - The Construction Centre
What is the easiest/cheapest way to achieve FD30 certification for an external, half-glazed cottage style kitchen door, please? Could I buy an ordinary door and paint it with fire-proof paint, or does it have to be made of fire-proof material? I need to meet Building Control 39;s requirements, and it is proving very difficult to locate a suitable door, especially at a reasonable cost.
Thank you.
