Types and Uses
How many times a day do we use a door handle without a second thought? It is only if a handle works loose, starts sticking or becomes worn and uncomfortable to hold that attention is paid to this vital component of every home, office or public building. Yet the choice of door handles is vast and it is well worth the architect, contractor or homeowner spending time taking a careful look through the offerings before specifying.
Aesthetics and function are equally important. Door handles need to be in a style and material to complement the property and the decor. Black ironmongery has been used for centuries; brass knobs and handles were popular in Georgian and Victorian times, with porcelain making an appearance from around 1850. For commercial buildings and contemporary homes, brass with a chrome or nickel plated finish is often favoured. Stainless steel is another quality choice.
Decisions have to be taken on whether to use door knobs or lever type handles and whether the handles will be on a rose or backplate. Levers are available in straight, mitred, arched or scrolled styles and some backplates are quite ornate. Then there is the question of whether the handle needs a latch, lock or thumb turn.
For both the amateur and the expert, it is worth considering how easy it is to assemble the handle and to fix it accurately. In nearly all cases, there is heavy workload on door handles, so go for quality products that offer durability.
