Types and Uses
Canopies come in a vast range of sizes and styles for many applications but they share a purpose – protection from the elements.
In most cases, it is shelter from cold and wet that is sought, and canopies enable people to move comfortably between different areas of a business or educational establishment, extend the use of a playground or provide comfort to passengers at transport stops. Health and safety can also be improved if the cover prevents conditions underfoot from becoming icy in winter. But, even in Britain’s fickle climate, the sun does shine – and canopies can also take the form of awnings to provide shade and cut glare.
There is also an important element of style as well as protection. A canopy prevents a home or business exterior looking bland.
Sizes vary from a small structure over a domestic entrance door to a canopy spanning the entire front of a supermarket or covering a car park. Materials used include aluminium with polycarbonate or glass, timber, GRP and wrought iron.
