W.Howard leads the way in sustainable timber practices

W.Howard, a leading manufacturer in the timber industry, is making significant strides in promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact. The company has placed sustainability at the forefront of its operations, particularly in the use of timber for construction, one of the most low-carbon building materials available.

W.Howard’s products are made exclusively from Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), which is crafted from recycled wood fibres. This approach not only reduces the amount of timber waste going to landfill but also eliminates the need to cut down new trees. By opting for MDF, W.Howard is helping create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Furthermore, all the company’s MDF profiles and real wood veneer products are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring that they are sourced from sustainable and reputable suppliers. The use of MDF also provides additional benefits, such as being free from defects like knots and warping, which reduces material waste on-site and maximizes efficiency for customers.

In terms of environmental impact, MDF also acts as a carbon store, with each cubic meter of MDF able to store 1.1 tonnes of CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. This makes W.Howard’s MDF profiles an excellent choice for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

W.Howard's environmental commitment extends beyond its products. The company holds the ISO14001 environmental performance standard, demonstrating its dedication to minimizing environmental impact across its operations. Additionally, all products are manufactured to ISO9001 quality standards, ensuring consistent excellence in both sustainability and craftsmanship.

Since 2019, W.Howard has taken further steps to reduce plastic waste by using 100% biodegradable wrapping for all delivered products. This wrapping degrades in as little as 60 days, preventing approximately 16 tonnes of non-biodegradable plastic from entering landfills annually.

In 2020, W.Howard added two new Rigid Trucks to its fleet, adhering to London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) regulations. These trucks allow the company to continue serving its customers in the Capital while meeting strict emission standards. W.Howard also holds the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) certification, reflecting its commitment to best practices in safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
