Tudor Roof tiles helping to transform house for TV project
Thousands of Tudor Roof Tile hand-made clay tiles were chosen to help transform an ‘Ugly House to Lovely House’.
An episode of the Channel 4 programme presented by George Clarke shown on March 28th featured a 1970s house in Saffron Walden, described as bland and boxy with more garage than house. Even the neighbours said it was ‘sad’.
Although there were two garages, they were tapered and ‘dysfunctional’. Inside the house, there were numerous ‘design disasters’, including a Jack and Jill shower inside a wardrobe. The owners Lucas and Hayley wanted more room for their growing family and a plus point was the house was on a large plot, although it was triangular.
Award-winning architect Chris Dyson was called in to unlock the potential of this ugly duckling. His plans included a huge two-storey extension replacing the garages and single-storey extensions at the back and side.
Chris Dyson said he wanted the exterior of the building to shine. His radical way of achieving this and unifying the disparate parts was to clad the entire house - roof and walls - in clay tiles. This is where Tudor’s hand-made clay plain tiles came in – enough to cover 332 sq m.
The result was dramatic.
