Sustainability covered at Bristols largest school
Street furniture manufacturer, Townscape Products Limited, has provided Bristol’s largest primary school with new eco-timber shelters as part of the school’s £5.2million extension.
Commissioned by project contractors, Skanska, Townscape was tasked to develop a sustainable and cost-effective canopy solution to link the old and new buildings at Air Balloon Hill Primary School in Bristol.
Townscape created two bespoke design 35-metre canopy shelters composed of piqua hardwood which is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. This sustainable mark guarantees the trees harvested are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally.
To ensure maximum strength while engineering an attractive mono pitch design in the wooden canopy, Townscape used a glulam method of construction. Glulam is a glue laminated timber structural product comprising a number of layers of dimensioned timber bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant structural adhesives.
Jonathan Goss, managing director of Townscape, said: “The majority of canopy shelters tend to be constructed using steel, Air Balloon Hill Primary School was clear it wanted a timber solution. This gave us the opportunity to develop a tailored eco-timber shelter which we are certain will attract interest from other specifiers, designers and contractors.
“The hardwood timber provides an attractive link between the old and new school buildings. The project is a great example of sustainability and design working together.”
Townscape manufactures and supplies bollards, seats, planters, litter bins, tree grids and guards, cycle racks and shelters, barriers and rails, paving, and security products.
