Stanton Bonna precast concrete solution for access road water courses

A bespoke precast concrete chamber from Stanton Bonna provided the water management solution for a new access road in Nottinghamshire aiming to bring new life to a redundant colliery site.

The Gedling Access Road (GAR) will support the redevelopment of the former Gedling Colliery, Chase Farm and adjoining land plus provide a bypass to link to the wider road network including Nottingham City Centre. The scheme includes sustainable redevelopment of the site for mixed use including residential, employment and community related areas.

In preparation for the construction of the new road, which will bypass the village of Gedling near Nottingham, VIA East Midlands, the commercial Highways and Infrastructure partner to Nottinghamshire County Council, was tasked with diverting a number of open watercourses which lay in its path.

Given the anticipated volume of water involved, large pipe diameters and a large central chamber were proposed to manage the flow and volume.

Designers proposed that pipe diameters of 900mm and 1400mm were required, flowing into a central chamber of 2700mm diameter.

VIA East Midlands spoke to their contact at Keyline Civils and Drainage in Nottingham who recommended Stanton Bonna Concrete to provide a bespoke solution working with drawings provided.

To facilitate the large diameter pipe entries into the 2700mm chamber, a bespoke 3-part base for the chamber was created with partial apertures cut into two of the sections. This enabled site to construct the chamber before safely removing the centre section on site. This then helped retain the structural integrity of the 2700mm ring whilst at the same time allowing for multiple 1400mm and 900mm pipe entries.

The result was an efficient, high capacity water management system which delighted Adrian Peck, Midlands & Northern Region Key Account Manager for Keyline Civils & Drainage. He said: “The team at Stanton Bonna were happy to rise to the challenge and delivered on time and in spec.”
