Solid Solutions from Knauf Insulation
Knauf Insulation, the UK’s leading manufacturer of insulation products, is showcasing its insulation solutions for solid walls at stand C10 of this year’s Greenbuild Expo. Both the ThermoShell® Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) system and ThermoShell External Wall Insulation (EWI) system will be on display, as well as information about the company’s highly sustainable Earthwool® and Polyfoam® insulation ranges.
Providing an effective method of upgrading solid masonry walls whilst delivering high levels of thermal performance, the cost-effective IWI and EWI Systems can raise a property to current Building Regulation thermal standards and beyond, drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions and significantly lowering energy bills.
Easily installed over a variety of existing substrates including brick, stonework, concrete and blockwork, the ThermoShell EWI system avoids any internal disruption, so it is particularly ideal for large residential properties, flats and office buildings, where installing internal wall insulation is not an option. The EWI system protects the existing façade from the effects of weathering and can extend the longevity of the building.
In situations where altering the exterior of the property is not possible, such as on listed buildings or in conservation areas, the ThermoShell IWI system is more suitable. The simplicity of the IWI allows a competent tradesman to undergo assessment and training to become an Approved Installer, enabling them to install and finish the system using a traditional plaster skim finish or dry lining techniques. No scaffolding is required and the system can be installed on a room-by-room basis, or as part of a whole house refurbishment plan.
Visitors to Greenbuild Expo will gain a realistic insight into the application of the EWI and IWI systems, as Knauf Insulation will be holding live demonstrations of the ThermoShell products in their mobile demonstration unit at the exhibition.
Lydia Sharples, head of communications at Knauf Insulation explains: “There are approximately seven million solid wall construction dwellings in the UK. In order for the Government to reach its Kyoto obligations in carbon reduction then all of these dwellings will require thermal upgrading by 2050. Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell IWI and EWI systems are ideal solutions for upgrading existing solid wall constructions and they can also be used on different elevations of the same property thereby delivering a 'hybrid' whole building solution.
“Knauf Insulation is committed to developing sustainable solutions for energy efficiency and we have recently added two new product groups to our extruded polystyrene insulation range, Polyfoam ECO and Polyfoam ECO PLUS, which will also be on display at Greenbuild Expo.”
The extended portfolio has been developed to meet the needs of tightening thermal Building Regulations, as well as reducing the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of each product, in line with Knauf Insulation’s commitment to greener practices.
The new Polyfoam products are manufactured in the UK and achieve a GWP of less than five and an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero. Free from CFCs, HCFCs and any other material with ODP in its manufacture and content, the Polyfoam range is also 100 per cent recyclable.
Finally, Knauf Insulation will also be displaying its Earthwool range of glass and rock mineral wool. Manufactured using the revolutionary ECOSE® Technology, a formaldehyde-free binder based on rapidly renewable materials, Earthwool benefits from reduced embodied energy and delivers superior environmental sustainability, and have a generic BRE Green Guide A+ rating.
