Slip resistant RonaDeck chosen for new Community Hospital
When a new community hospital opened in Cockermouth, Cumbria, this year, it put an end to four years of GPs having to operate from temporary buildings after severe flooding hit the former 100-year-old building. Ronacrete’s resin bound surfacing, RonaDeck, was chosen for the entrance to the new hospital and paths around the gardens and was laid by Ronacrete approved contractor Route One Highways.
The new community hospital houses Castlegate and Derwent GP surgeries, a pharmacy, a physiotherapy department and an in-patient ward. The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing is slip resistant and is suitable for wheel chairs, so was an ideal choice. The porous surface also allows rainwater to quickly and easily drain through into the earth beneath if it is part of a SuDS compliant system, so means there is less risk of flooding and should prove particularly valuable in times of extreme rainfall.
Choc Chip Harvest aggregate blend, with a wide variety of aggregate shades, was chosen for the project. The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin; the two components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a forced action mixer containing the aggregate blend. The RonaDeck surfacing was spread to level at a depth of 15mm before being smoothed with a steel float. Altogether, Route One highways laid 880 sq m of the surfacing at the Cockermouth hospital.
