Roy Wakeman Order of the British Empire in New Year Honours List

Timothy Roy Wakeman, OBE, known as Roy Wakeman, Chair and Chief Executive of the Performance Timber Products Group (PTP), has been acknowledged for services to the Joinery Manufacturing Industry in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2012.

Roy Wakeman

Roy has been widely recognised as the leading figure in the joinery and woodworking manufacturing industry for the past 25 years. He is the name behind many successful business initiatives and under his leadership has transformed ailing businesses into innovative and profitable companies, championing product innovation and providing security to hundreds of employees.

During exceptionally challenging markets, Roy has continued the growth of PTP since its inception in 2006 with the acquisition of the premier timber window brand Mumford & Wood, specialists in period windows and doors. Since then, Clearwood UK, TimberWindows.com, the fastest growing consumer fenestration brand, Dale Windows and The English Glasshouse have all joined the PTP inventory of timber brands. In 2010 Roy engineered the acquisition of John Porter Doors from administration, the quality timber commercial doors brand, which remains at the Sunderland base.

The Group employs over 230 people throughout the UK and has state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities with technically advanced plant and equipment that push manufacturing boundaries to the limit. Roy’s professional ethos is to provide customers with innovative market-leading, high performance timber products, service-excellence, cost efficiencies and impressive lead times. The Group has grown from £6m - £20m per annum and has more than doubled its employees.

Between 1994 and 1999, Roy brought together Leaderflush Doors Ltd, Longdens Ltd and Shapland & Petter with the result being Europe’s largest specialist performance door and doorset manufacturers, Leaderflush-Shapland. Roy is responsible for introducing the fully certificated, assembled and factory glazed doorset, the ‘Quest for Quality’, and introduced a unique scheme to train installers. In 2004 Roy was behind the company’s first manufacturing-under-licence agreement in China with Hong-Kong based JEC, a division of Jardine Matherson. The business was sold to SIG PLC in 2005 with a turnover of £40m and massively increased profitability.

Roy has also taken the unprecedented honour of being re-elected to stand as President of the British Woodworking Federation in 2011 for the third time in his career. He has been involved in the BWF for over 30 years, serving two terms as President (1987 - 89 and 2000 - 2001) and another term as Treasurer. Roy was one of the key figures in the rescue of the BWF from financial crisis in 1996 and laid the foundations for its recovery and future success. He has been Chairman of the Construction Confederation (2005 - 07), and currently chairs the Construction Products Association’s Network Club.
