Protect-ing Universitys Commitment to Sustainability
De Montfort University has taken an innovative approach to ensuring refurbishment of a 1960s faculty building delivers optimum sustainability, with help from Glidevale Ltd.
Bosworth House, which is in its original state since its construction in the 1960s, is being brought up to latest standards under an £8m refurbishment and extension programme. As a result, main contractor Baggaley Construction, on the instruction of project architects JSP, has wrapped the building shell in the latest membrane pioneered by Glidevale, the UK’s leading supplier of vapour control solutions, Protect 200 Façade.
Purpose designed for open rainscreen clad buildings, Protect 200 Façade simultaneously allows excess vapour within the structure to escape, yet still prevents external moisture in wind, rain, and snow etc from penetrating inside; its black fleece outer layer provides maximum durability, even at open cladding joints.
The installed Protect Façade, hidden from view behind a highly detailed and decorated curtain wall glazing system, will ensure Bosworth House’s interior stays warm and dry, delivering high class teaching facilities for the university’s nursing and midwifery departments, and delivering a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.
Richard Smith, of De Montfort University’s Estate Department, observed: “This is the first time Bosworth House has been refurbished since it was built, so there was a huge amount to do to bring it up to modern standards in both design and build techniques. We felt it important that we more than met the latest regulations in such an intensive upgrading. The architect for the project, JSP, specified Protect Façade for the walls to enable us to meet our objectives as efficiently as possible.”
Protect 200 Façade is the latest addition to the comprehensive Protect membrane range of roofing underlays, vapour permeable and impermeable membranes from Glidevale, including Protect A1, Protect VP400, Protect VC Foil, Protect Zytec, Protect Wunderlay and Protect TF200 Thermo. The company- part of the Building Product Design Group- additionally supplies roofing and roof ventilation products aimed at providing innovative yet practical solutions to changing market requirements.
