Planet Partitioning hopes for success for The Word
Planet Partitioning is delighted that The Word, in South Shields, has been nominated for two Construction Excellence awards and a RIBA regional award. The new cultural centre features Planet’s market leading partitioning screens and doors.
Designed by FaulkerBrowns Architects and built by Bowmer & Kirkland, The National Centre for the Written Word in the North-East Building (known as ‘The Word’), is a central player in South Shield’s larger regeneration project and was completed in the autumn of 2016.
Planet’s Leeds division was excellently placed to work on this ambitious local project. With 80% of all works being carried out by local contractors, Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, stated that it was, “vital that this significant regeneration project helps to boost economic growth and job opportunities for local people”. He went on to say that this would include the prioritisation of local contractors, like Planet Leeds.
Being a spectacular building, it is easy to see why the project has gained so much recognition from industry heavyweights. A three-storey, circular space, The Word looks over the town’s bustling marketplace and incorporates a library and digital media spaces. The state of the art facility is additionally home to numerous further amenities, such as a library, an exhibition space, a computer gaming area, a children’s immersive storytelling area, café, and rooftop garden.
Planet would like to thank Bowmer & Kirkland and FaulkerBrowns Architects for the opportunity to be involved with this outstanding project, and wish them luck for the awards.
