Newton celebrates 170 years of protecting UK buildings
Newton Waterproofing Systems is this year celebrating its 170th anniversary of trading, having originally been founded as John Newton & Company Ltd in 1848 by the original John Newton.
From humble beginnings as a supplier of plasterers hair in Bermondsey, to game-changing inventions including the first physical damp proof membrane, meshed membranes, cavity drainage systems for basements, and a nationwide network of approved and vetted specialist contractors, Newton has been at the heart of industry best practice throughout its 170-year tenure.
Not only is Newton the oldest UK supplier of waterproofing and damp proofing products, but unusually (and as they have been since 1848) the company is still completely independent and family owned. In fact, it is to this family ethos and independent status that many employees at Newton credit the company’s success over the years. Without the bias of shareholders or manufacturer ties, Newton is free to objectively source the best products for the UK waterproofing industry; a level of impartiality that not only distinguishes them from their competition but also allows them to provide a complete range of waterproofing solutions for all projects and scenarios.
This outlook is personified by Newton Chairman Christopher Newton, great-grandson of the original John Newton (pictured), who has been involved with the family company since 1963, and as Chairman since the 1970s. With a career in UK waterproofing spanning 55 years, he still values the environment of the company as the cause for its enduring success:
“I have always been proud to say that Newton is a family-run company, with a strong family ethos that provides the foundation for our 21st century company. Coupled with our independent status, this approach grants us complete impartiality and a valuable freedom of choice, therefore allowing us to grow and improve whilst consistently offering the highest levels of service and sourcing new and innovative solutions,” said the Chairman.
The modern-day Newton has been based in Tonbridge in Kent since 2012, after a mere 164 years at its original premises in Bermondsey, and now has 33 employees providing solutions for architects, developers, contractors and homeowners on projects from the smallest domestic basement, to high-end properties, commercial developments and extensive civil infrastructure projects.
In 2017 the company became the first UK waterproofing company to develop a recycling service for waste cavity drain membrane, and also launched the Newton Waterproofing Index, a first-of-its-kind system for scoring waterproofing designs and making specification as simple as possible for the specifier.
