Manchester Airport Strengthens Terminal Protection with the Help of Townscape
MANCHESTER Airport has bolstered the security outside its main terminal buildings with the installation of Counter Terrorist (CT) blocks manufactured by Townscape Products Limited.
The Townscape CT blocks will prevent unwanted vehicle incursion at the departure and arrival areas of each terminal building.
Manchester Airport also used the installation of the vehicle defence system to create a new transport and taxi drop off area designed to improve customer transit times and enhance the whole airport experience.
Jonathan Goss, managing director of Nottinghamshire-based street furniture manufacturer Townscape, said: “Manchester Airport Group (MAG) tasked us to design and create an attractive external landscape outside terminal buildings which would protect the buildings and people inside from vehicle incursion yet not create an eyesore.
“Our CT blocks only need to be recessed into the surrounding tarmac, concrete or paved area to a depth of 100mm. This makes the installation period quick, easy and cost effective as no major groundworks are required – a major selling point for MAG as it created substantial cost savings and meant little disruption to busy airport life.”
The Townscape CT blocks were manufactured from a unique reconstituted stone mix using specially selected aggregates. Additional quartz Cornish fines were added to the mix to enhance the final finish of the exposed natural stone. Designed and built to the rigorous PAS 68 standard, the units are tested and approved at TRL for CPNI.
Jonathan added: “The installation of Townscape CT blocks can generate overall project cost savings of around 50 per cent over fixed bollard solutions, due to lower unit costs and reduced installation costs.
“Our CT blocks combine the elements of form and function perfectly and collectively convey a strong visual deterrent while adding an attractive feature to the open plaza.”
