Flexseal staff are fighting fit for charity
Employees of Drainage & Plumbing coupling manufacturer Flexseal have recently been getting fit and raising money at two very different sporting events for two different cancer charities – and all have smashed their fundraising targets.
Jack Edwards of the company’s Marketing Department literally fought for his charity Cancer Research UK when he stepped into a boxing ring in early September. One week later, Glenn Cartledge, General Manager of sister company Source One Environmental, and Purchasing Department staff Liam Cleary and Santos Matamoros slogged it out at the Nidderdale Sprint Triathlon on behalf of the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, based in Sheffield.
Jack’s event was one of a series across the country organised by Ultra White Collar Boxing for people who’ve never boxed before. “When you sign up, you receive 8 weeks of free boxing training before you take part in a proper boxing match,” explained Jack (wearing red in the picture). “It seemed a great way to raise money for charity while getting fit. It’s a real challenge and it was a fantastic buzz to win my bout at the end – that was the cherry on the cake.”
The Nidderdale Sprint Triathlon saw Glenn, Liam and Santos swim 400 metres, cycle 20 km over hilly terrain and run a further 5 km through picturesque valleys and fields. Taking part in a triathlon was a first for all three of the team and was initially Glenn’s idea. “When we entered, I was managing the Purchasing Team and I thought it would be a great way to bring the team together, while doing our bit for a local charity,” said Glenn. “As we’ve gone on, the competitiveness between us definitely grew, but we all had a good laugh at the event. We’d all love to have another go – maybe next year.”
In total, the four Flexseal employees have raised well over £1,000 for charity from these two events.
