CPM precast drainage products chosen for major road project

Work to widen a notorious bottleneck section of the A30 in Cornwall was completed this summer, with local residents and holidaymakers alike letting out a sigh of relief. The project to dual the last section of single carriageway on the A30 between the M5 at Exeter and the Carland Cross junction with the A39, north of Truro, has seen precast concrete chamber rings and flexible jointed pipes from the CPM Group installed.

Contractors Kier Construction chose precast drainage products for their reliability and flexibility of the system – that allowed Kiers to work alongside the traffic regulations placed upon them. The chamber rings and pipes were delivered from CPM Group’s Somerset works.
The £33million highways contract was part-funded by Cornwall Council in conjunction with the Highways Agency. A 5km stretch of the A30, between Temple and Higher Carblake, had long suffered from traffic congestion and poor journey times.
The site programme began in June 2015 and Kiers finished the works this summer.
Sean Jeffrey, Kier Infrastructure executive director, commented: “The award of this capital investment project, working with Cornwall Council and the Highways Agency, is an excellent demonstration of Kier’s increasing presence in the capex highways market. It’s a strategically important scheme for the region, providing much-needed highways improvements and increased capacity.”
UK road infrastructure development will be the focus of Highways UK, the exhibition for people and organisations involved in the planning, designing, building, operating and future-proofing of the UK’s road network, at the NEC on November 8th and 9th. CPM Group will be on Stand D31.
