Civil engineers say no contest between concrete pipes and Tubosider steel tank
With the help of Tubosider, Birmingham-based civil engineers T Mullane have value engineered considerable savings on the cost of building of a new ultra-modern special school in Loughborough.
Ashmount is funded by Leicestershire County Council and is the fourth area special school to be developed in the county, due to open in spring 2014 at a cost of £9.35 million.
The project is the latest in a string of collaborations between T Mullane and main contractor Wilmott Dixon, and once again shows the value of having groundworks specialists design the stormwater and drainage system.
Guy Bainbridge, quantity surveyor at T Mullane, quickly saw that the original plan for twin 1500mm concrete pipes was “way over the top” for the school, and contacted Tubosider as a trusted supplier over the last eight years.
“Installing concrete chambers with a 4 metre span in-situ would have been a massive and expensive exercise,” he says. “Right from the first discussion with Paul Wagnell, my regional contact at Tubosider, we were confident that we could value engineer the attenuation design.
“Having a Tubosider tank not only saved us greatly on groundwork and installation, with all the attendant costs, but we could have ready access to any part of the tank with 11 fewer manholes. It took a good margin off the concrete solution,” says Guy Bainbridge.
T Mullane has a strong record with many leading contractors in and around the Midlands, and has specified Tubosider regularly. In addition to years of experience with large private build projects, they carry out a lot of work in education and the public sector.
This new special school under construction will provide a new home for Ashmount School and improve facilities for disability and special needs sport in the area. With places for 125 children and young people up to 19, it will feature a hydrotherapy pool, sensory and therapy suite, physio room and conference and training room.
Being located on the same campus as Charnwood College also opens up opportunities for the two schools to work together and share sporting and other facilities. The children of Ashmount School will have the first-class facilities that they deserve and will be able to access many of the excellent resources at the College.
