Cash Available for GSHP Installation in DECC Social Housing RHPP Competition
There is no doubt that ground source heat pumps are the ideal choice for social housing retrofit properties, with low running costs, no servicing costs and minimal maintenance requirements over the anticipated 25 year lifetime of the product. However, installation costs have always provided a barrier to mass uptake of the technology.
On May 28th, DECC launched the second Renewable Heat Premium Payment Competition (RHPP) allowing social housing landlords to apply for significant funding towards the cost of the installation of ground source heat pumps to eligible housing stock. The most generous funding will be available to schemes where more carbon intensive fuels such as direct electric and solid fuel appliances are replaced.
Social Housing landlords are invited to submit a bid for money to support the installation of GSHPs. Given the high demand last year, the overall budget for this year’s scheme has doubled to £10million.
Kensa Engineering, a UK manufacturer of ground source heat pumps, is ideally placed to assist with applications having delivered over 70 of the 110 GHSP installations funded in the first RHPP competition last year. Any organisation interested in participating in the scheme will have to move fast as all applications have to be submitted by 4th July 2012.
The motivation to act swiftly is substantial, as in addition to RHPP funding, any scheme that is completed by the end of December 2012 could also qualify for funding through CERT or CESP. Like RHPP, direct electric and solid fuel appliances will attract higher levels of funding, but to qualify properties will have to be in recognised CESP areas, or have Super Priority Group tenants.
With the combination of funding available, it is likely that the ground source heat pump installations would be fully funded.
