Ultrascape Helps to Transform Garden City Streets
Letchworth Garden City’s Town Centre has undergone a dramatic transformation with the help of bedding mortar, primer and innovative flowable grout. The BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system was used to revitalise the historic UK tourist area by the team from Skanska UK, and was officially opened in June this year.
Streetscene and environmental improvements on Eastcheap and Leys Avenue, within Garden City, were proposed for the £8million regeneration by the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. The project sought to develop a central pedestrian link connecting retailing areas and the proposed developments in The Wynd and Arena, and an improved and less cluttered streetscene, alongside an attractive and enjoyable visitor friendly experience – all made possible with Ultrascape and Skanska.
Since the project began in May 2009 Skanska had been developing the new ‘town square’ with Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS bedding mortar, Pro-Prime slurry primer and Flowpoint flowable grout. Pro-Bed HS is a fine bedding concrete that can be open to foot traffic in 12 hours – the first step in a fast-track system that helped the project to be completed on time. Supplied in 30 tonne silos, Pro-Bed HS provides the perfect solution for large scale streetscape projects. It is now also available containing recycled glass as Pro-Bed HS ECO – meaning a massive 6 tonnes of non-virgin aggregate in one silo.
Moseldon Yorkstone from Marshalls, and Granite in both oatmeal and pearl from Miller Druck International, were laid after application of Pro-Prime slurry primer, providing an exceptional bond between the stone materials and bedding mortar. Once laid, Flowpoint rapid setting grout was used for jointing the area. Flowpoint is a unique flowable grout that can be poured over paved areas and simply washed away, with no concern for staining – the final step in ensuring a fast completion for the regeneration project, being open to foot traffic in just one hour!
