Ultracrete Bedding Mortars are Keeping London Cycle Scheme on Track

Ultracrete’s high performance bedding mortars PY4 and ENVIROBED HA104® have been used to install a number of docking stations for London’s public cycle hire scheme.

Ultracrete for cycle docking stations

The cycle hire scheme is one of the first of its kind in the country. The multi million pound system started operating in July 2010 and includes around 6,000 bikes and 11,000 docking points over 400 locations in central London.

Installation and maintenance contractor Kelly Integrated Transport Services Ltd, specified Ultracrete PY4 and ENVIROBED HA104® to install the docking points and terminal units for the cycle rails located in central London and Kensington.

PY4 is a two-part component, fast setting polyester resin mortar with a proven track record across many applications, and is particularly suitable for the rapid installation and reinstatement of manhole frames, gully grates, kerbs and street furniture in heavily trafficked areas. It can be applied at zero degrees C and is suitable for depths of 5mm-50mm.

Kelly I.T.S has commented that the performance of PY4 was exceptional and the product’s fast setting times enabled easy installation of the cycle rails in busy line restricted areas throughout London.

Ultracrete ENVIROBED HA104® is a revolutionary, next generation, environmentally friendly bedding mortar alternative to resin-based materials. It is supplied as a two-component system which contains a blend of special cements, polymer graded aggregates and recycled glass. The combined components provide a high performance mortar, which can accommodate depths of 10-50mm in one pass. If necessary, greater depths can be achieved by using a layer-upon-layer method. ENVIROBED HA104® can be used at temperatures as low as 1 degree C; its early tensile strengths provide significant resistance to heavy trafficking (5.8N/mm² tensile strength after 3 hours).

ENVIROBED HA104® and PY4 are part of the Ultracrete BBA/HAPAS Approved Ironwork Reinstatement System and unlike resins, can be used in wet weather conditions. Both products provide for early trafficking and comply with the Department of Transport Design Manual for Roads and Bridges: Mortars for Bedding Ironwork, HA104/02.
