Top Marks for Ultrascape at Kingsway College

Ultrascape, part of Instarmac Group plc, was contracted to help with the redevelopment of Westminster’s Kingsway College in London.

Ultrascape, a renowned brand of the Instarmac Group plc, has scored top marks at Westminster Kingsway College following the completion of a 150m² area of hard landscaping.

Ultrascape have been formulating and manufacturing a specialist range of concretes, mortars and grouts that meet and exceed the ever-increasing demands of pavement and carriageway construction using concrete and natural stone setts and flagstones, based on their group expertise for over 14 years. Landscape architects, engineers and contractors alike have specified and applied, with added confidence, the Ultrascape paving system to urban streetscape and hard landscape projects throughout the UK and Europe, where strength, durability and style all matter.

The redevelopment of Westminster Kingsway College located at the junction of Grey’s Inn Road and Sidmouth Street, the King’s Cross Centre is home to over 14,000 students and more than 600 staff. Westminster Kingsway College is one of the largest colleges for further education in the capital, and the redevelopment meant that all of the College’s Camden-based vocational provision would be combined into a single site.

Situated at the rear of the building is a large courtyard with an access road to the college. Bond Bryan Architects specified Ultrascape’s Mortar Paving System to complete the paved courtyard and roadway due to its compliance to British Standard BS7533.

Sub Contractors J. W. Munroe Construction Ltd, who were completing the project’s hard landscaping, contacted the Ultrascape team for product and application advice. Their Training Site Support Team visited site to demonstrate how the products were to be mixed and applied to ensure a flawless finish. The contractors benefited greatly from the training they received, which aided them with completing the job on time.

Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS, fine bedding concrete was used to bed the Diamond Sawn, Siler Grey Granite Setts into place, being specifically formulated to meet and exceed the strict demands of BS7533. Ultrascape Pro-Prime slurry primer was used in conjunction with #prod,Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS to provide a more durable bond between the stones’ surface and the bedding mortar promoting an adhesion of greater than 2N/mm². Contractor-friendly sized 25kg bags and the simple addition of water on site simply added to the long list of benefits.

Ultrascape Flowpoint, a rapid setting flowable grout, was used for the 8mm joint throughout the courtyard and roadway. Flowpoint again is formulated to meet the strict demands of BS7533 for rigid construction where a fluid consistency and early trafficking are essential. It is able to reach a bond strength of >1.5N/mm² and compressive strength of 49.6N/mm² which exceed the requirements of BS7533.

When using Flowpoint flowable grout, the newly grouted area can be open to foot traffic in 1 hour and vehicular traffic in 4 hours, which enabled the college to open its new redevelopment on time.

All parties involved in the redevelopment of the college were thoroughly pleased with the results. The obvious benefits of Ultrascape products meant that all areas of development were completed on time with the durability and style that was needed to give the college the perfect finish it required.
