Press Room: John Newton Membranes Saves Royal Courts of Justice

John Newton Membranes Saves Royal Courts of Justice

The waterproofing and drainage specialist was contracted to design and install a bespoke waterproofing system for the Grade 1 Listed English Heritage project.

This Grade I listed structure has a labyrinth of unused basement areas. With space at a premium, the courts looked to converting part of the brick basement areas into habitable space.

A John Newton Membranes System 500 waterproofing system was designed and installed by a Newton Specialist Basement Contractor (NSBC) with Newton 508 Mesh chosen as the waterproofing membrane.

The use of Newton 508 Mesh meant that costly and damaging surface preparation was not required. The membrane was fixed into the mortar joints with Newton Nu-seal plugs meaning that if required, the system can be removed with minor pointing all that would be required to restore the vaults to their original condition in accordance with Listed Building requirements.

The vaults are now fully refurbished and used as a rest area with luxury bar giving a habitable area to Grade 3 of the environmental table within BS8102.

The Victorian Bird Beak Arches were sympathetically waterproofed whilst retaining the original features of this historic property. The Newton 508 Mesh was expertly fitted to follow exactly the curvature of the converging arches to leave a perfectly detailed surface ready for the plastering contractor. The Newton solution proved to be quick, sympathetic to the structure and provided a perfectly dry environment required for the end use of the area and was well received by the end-client who was delighted that the guidelines of both the British Stand and National Heritage were fully complied with.
