John Newton Membranes Damp Proofs Douai Abbey

John Newton Membranes provides a cost effective and time efficient damp proofing solution for the Grade II listed building in Theale, Berkshire.

Douai Abbey is a Grade II Listed Building which was used as a Public School until the late 1990’s. Due to severe damp penetration the property was uninhabitable and in need of total refurbishment.

After consultation with a variety of different manufacturers, Bewley Homes contacted John Newton and Company for a free on site meeting so as to ascertain the most cost effective and simplistic solution. Previously they had been advised to repoint the entire structure externally (approximately 6,000 square metres) and apply a chemical DPC. Not only was this solution expensive and time consuming, but it was not sympathetic to the structure.

Newton’s technical department advised to apply Newlath 2000 internally to the external walls and finish with an independent dry lining system.

After 3-4 weeks the Old Abbey had been successfully converted into a complex of luxury apartments free from the effects of damp penetration.

Newlath 2000 is ideal for this type of refurbishment project as minimal surface preparation is required and the system is totally reversible meaning it is highly sympathetic to the building fabric. The membrane allows the wall to breathe thus not trapping any previous moisture within the structure.
